Spring cleaning in the kitchen

This article is the first in our series on spring cleaning. We know, it doesn’t feel like spring is coming anytime soon, and since the groundhog said that it was going to be another 6 weeks, it’s going to feel even longer. But, just because it’s not spring yet doesn’t mean that you can’t get started on your spring cleaning tasks.

One of the most difficult places to get clean is your kitchen, which is why we decided it would be the first destination in our journey of spring cleaning. Here are some of the things that you should be looking at when it comes to cleaning out your kitchen.

– Get rid of any appliances that aren’t working or that you don’t use. Yes, I know that you may just need that roaster thing that your aunt gave you when she cleaned out her kitchen, but when was the last time you used it? A good rule of thumb is, if you haven’t used it in a year, you probably aren’t going to use it. If it’s still working, donate it or give it away; if it’s not working (or not working well), toss it or recycle it with Junk Jitsu.

– Clean out the fridge and clean off the shelves. We all lose track of time when it comes to the food that we eat. Because of that, we end up with outdated food that we keep pushing aside. Take the time to go through all of the food in your house to make sure all it is within its expiration date. Note: there are some foods that you can use a week or two after that date, especially if they’re canned vegetables or something similar. Foods with flour and other perishable ingredients have to be tossed, though.

– Wipe everything down, twice. No matter how clean you keep your kitchen, all of that cleaning is going to kick up some dust, dirt, and other gross things. There may also be bacteria and such that is residue from whatever tasks you have done in your kitchen recently. So, after you’re done cleaning everything out of your kitchen, wipe it down. You may even want to do it twice, since you want to prevent that stuff from getting onto your food and eating utensils.

– Check all of your cleaning supplies. While you’re digging through your cupboards, you may as well also check out the cleaning supplies. Yes, certain cleaning supplies (not many) have expiration dates or, in the case of wet wipes and other similar materials, they may have dried out. Or, you may have an empty container that you forgot to throw away. Make sure you get rid of all of that as well, and then replace what you need to replace. That way, your house can stay sparkling clean, you’ll have the appropriate cleaning supplies for when you start working on the rest of your house, and you won’t be surprised by something that is empty or not working.

Junk and Fire Hazards

In our last article, we talked about how clutter can make you stressed out. And while that’s inconvenient (and in some cases, can cause you some severe health problems), there are other more serious issues that may come up as a result of clutter and such.

Did you know that clutter can actually lead to an increased fire hazard in your home? It’s true. There are a number of reasons that clutter actually makes the chance for fire in your home worse, and it also makes it harder for you and your family to escape, in the case that there is a fire. Why? Here are the main concerns you have to consider.

First, if you have a lot of clutter, you likely have a lot of things that are flammable/combustible. That means that, even if there’s only a little spark, it’s going to be more likely to grow into a fire that is going to be harder to contain. The severity of the fire has the potential to be much, much worse just because there is so much that can be burned. More fuel always equals more fire, and therefore makes the situation that much worse.

If you and your family are trying to escape from a fire, there are also a number of problems that can come into play. For example, if you’ve got too much junk and clutter around your home, some of it may just be in the way when you’re trying to exit your home, causing you or your family members to trip or be unable to get out a window, through a hallway, or exit out a door. The other issue that can occur is, if your home is on fire, stuff can fall on you and your family while you’re trying to escape. Falling items are especially dangerous, because if they fall on you or obstruct your way, you can suffer severe injury or even die as a result. Clutter also causes the same exact problems for firefighters who are trying to get in and out of your home during the incident.

If you want to keep yourself and your family safe, then reducing the clutter in your home should be a priority. A junk removal company (like Junk Jitsu serving the Chantilly, Virginia area!) can help you to get rid of all of your clutter so that you feel safe and comfortable in your home once again.
