Today, we’re going to hit the last of our spring cleaning series and talk about spring cleaning in the yard. The yard is a place that we sometimes neglect, especially if we don’t have a garden or another reason to really clean it up at all. So, here are some tips that you can use to help clean up your yard for the spring.
Clean up all of that debris. Wintertime makes our yards really messy, which can cause some problems when it comes to spring cleaning. Tree branches fall, runoff makes piles of mud and dirt, and you may even still have leaves left from the fall because the snow started coming too quickly. Before you do anything else, get rid of what Mother Nature left you. Many local governments will offer pickup services a couple of times a year for natural debris, and if your area does not, Junk Jitsu can help you out with that as well.
Mow a couple weeks into spring, when the grass has finally gotten green and is starting to get tall. You want to an initial mowing because it will help get rid of the dead grass that may be underneath. The first mowing is pretty rough sometimes, but it will be good and it will help your yard look healthy and ready to go for the rest of the spring and summer. Also, it’ll help you to get a head start on the mowing thing, so your neighbors/landlord/homeowner’s association won’t get upset with you because you “aren’t keeping your yard up to the standards.”
If you have a garden, start pulling weeds and preparing those areas for planting. If you start pulling the weeds early, it’ll be easier to clean up when it’s time for you to actually start planting. Why deal with more weeds if you don’t want or have to? It’ll just make the process that much more difficult later on, and you’re already going to be breaking your back when you get to actually planting your flowers and vegetables.
Get rid of clutter, junk, and things that don’t work anymore. Is there a broken bird fountain in your yard? Is the fence busted, or did you repair it and you still have the broken piece sitting somewhere? Is there a lawn mower or weedwacker that’s just sitting there that hasn’t worked in years? Now is the time to get rid of all of that – your neighbors and your family will appreciate that it’s out of the way, and it will make your yard look that much nicer to everyone that may come and visit your home.
