Simple ways to go green in your home

Have you ever considered “going green?” Going green isn’t just a fad; it’s actually incredibly important for the future of your city, the country, even the entire world. Anything that you can do in order to help the environment, no matter how small you may think your impact may be.

But does going green have to cost a lot of money? Do you have to put a lot of effort into it? Don’t think that you have to go absolutely crazy, by adding a greenhouse to your roof or by changing to fully solar power. There are a number of very simple ways that you can start going green in your own home, without investing a lot of time and effort. Want to know how? Here are a few ways.

– You can switch to household cleaners that are “green,” or you can start making your own instead of buying the ones that you can get from the store. If you’re looking to save money, the latter is the better option; most homemade cleaners include baking soda, vinegar, and a number of other inexpensive, common household items. But, green cleaners are not much more expensive than their “standard” counterparts.

– Consider changing your diet. Did you know that it actually is helpful for the environment if you stop eating meat as often? It’s true! Raising livestock actually costs a lot of energy and greenhouse gasses, so that means that if your family stops eating meat for one day, it can have as much as an impact as you would get if you decided to stop driving one day a week.

– Do you want to save money? Then make sure that the insulation in your home is up-to-date. This is incredibly energy efficient; not only will it keep you warmer in the winter; it will also help keep your home cooler in the summer. So that means you will be saving money and you’ll be saving the environment because you won’t be wasting energy from your home.

– Donate your items. We talked about this in another article, but it can also be a way for you to go green with your lifestyle. When you donate your items, it means that those items aren’t wasting space in landfills and other areas. It also means that someone else isn’t buying new items, which means that energy isn’t being wasted when corporations make new items.

– As of January 1st, old filament light bulbs are no longer sold at stores (except for applications for appliances, like microwaves and ovens). Take advantage of this change by going to your local store and purchasing energy efficient light bulbs. These light bulbs help save energy and they help to save the environment too. They’re also more environmentally friendly to dispose of, as well.
