Doesn’t downsizing seem to be a trend nowadays? If you haven’t heard about it, downsizing is when you go through your home and you move to a smaller space. Many people do it in cities or if their children have grown up and moved out. Smaller spaces usually cost less and are less of a pain to take care of when it comes to cleaning and other tasks.
When you do this, you usually have to try and determine what you don’t need any more. By doing that, you will reduce the amount of clutter that you have in your home. That being said, you don’t necessarily have to be moving in order to downsize what you’ve got – here are some basic tips you can use when you’re looking to downsize the amount of stuff you have in your home!
Make inventory of all the things you absolutely cannot get rid of. When you downsize, you don’t have to get rid of absolutely everything! If you have items that are of sentimental value, or you have items that you use on a regular basis, you can totally keep them! Write all of it down and then make sure that those items don’t accidentally get taken away with everything else that you are getting rid of. Put these things in a special spot if you have to, and tell the other people in your home not to touch it.
Take your time! Don’t feel like you have to do everything right away. Even if you’re moving, make sure that you give yourself sufficient time (like, a couple of months) in order to get everything sorted properly. That way, if you also have to have a yard sale, go to pawn shops, or contact a junk removal company to come and take some of your stuff away, you can schedule that appointment without any issues and without giving yourself more stress than you want to deal with.
Don’t just get rid of stuff – recycle, donate, sell, or give away! Many people will just trash everything – you don’t want to do that! You want to take some time and see if you can either get money for the stuff you’re getting rid of, or donate it to Goodwill or another organization that will be able to get it to people who need it. You can even give it away to friends if you know that they need something (I’ve gotten my fair share of hand-me-downs in my day!). Either way, don’t just throw it away – your “junk” could be someone else’s treasure.
