How to determine what is junk

Now, you may be thinking about using Junk Jitsu’s services, but you aren’t 100% sure on what you need to keep and what you need to get rid of. What is junk? How can you determine what you consider “junk” and what you’re going to keep around your home?

question_1544984c

We figured that may come up, so that’s why we decided to focus this blog post on that very question. How do you determine what is junk and what you should keep? Here are four major questions that you should ask when you are figuring out whether an item is junk or something that you should keep.

When was the last time you used it? The general rule of thumb is, if you haven’t used it in more than a year, then it’s probably time for you to get rid of it. Yes, that even means the crockpot that you have that only comes out when you absolutely have to use it.

Is it wasting space? This is a hard thing to determine. If there’s a couch in your home that no one uses, then you may want to consider ditching it because it’s just in the way. If your closet looks to be overloaded with clothing, then you may have to start digging through it in order to figure out what you wear and what you don’t wear. If the item you are looking at seems to be in the way, then you may either want to relocate it or junk it.

Do you have multiples of that specific item? Why do you need two of that kitchen appliance? Do you really need the extra poster that looks exactly the same as the one you have hanging in your bedroom? Do you need three copies of the same book? Usually, the answer for that question is “no,” so if you’re finding that you have multiples of the same item, one of them can be dealt with so that they aren’t taking space (as discussed above).

Does it work or fit anymore? I will admit that I have been known to keep a strand of Christmas lights that don’t work, because I’m convinced that I can make them work next year. I will keep a pair of pants that I assume will fit me after I’ve lost weight. But if neither of those things is happening, why am I keeping them? It’s silly. If you have items that don’t work or don’t fit, don’t waste your time with them. If Junk Jitsu takes them, we can get the working parts to the appropriate people so that they can be used again. If it doesn’t fit you, we can make sure that it gets to someone that it will fit! That’s the great part about our services – even if you can’t use it anymore, we can make sure it gets somewhere where it can.
