If you remember, last month we talked about all of the different benefits that come emotionally when we give to other people who may be in need or that we care about. Giving is such a big theme during this time of year. Even though the holidays are basically over, that doesn’t mean that we just forget about everything that has to do with giving – many of us will make New Year’s Resolutions that revolve around generosity and giving more to others.
This month, we’re going to look at the spiritual benefits that come with generosity. Now, don’t assume that just because they’re “spiritual” that they are for one particular religion or faith. They are meant for everyone who is looking to become more in tune with themselves and the world around them. So keep that in mind as you read.
Giving reminds us of our connection to everything and everyone around us. We are connected to everything around us, whether or not we realize it. What we do has a significant effect on everything that happens to the people and the things all around us. Sometimes, we need to be reminded of our place in the world and understand that, yes, we are connected to it. By giving to others, we are acknowledging that connection and using it for a good cause.
Giving helps us to feel “more human.” We are, obviously, very human. But sometimes we lose touch with what being human is. Many times, being human is considered to be a journey, and by giving to others, we’re remembering that we aren’t on this journey alone. There are millions of people around the world that are on this journey with us, and giving to those in need can really make a difference.
Giving helps us to play a role in the universe’s plan. Many religions believe that, yes, there is a divine force or power that is watching out for us and taking care of us. That being said, it’s important that we understand that we are a vital part of the plan that the divine being that we believe in is taking care of. We have influence and can play a role by giving to others who may be in need or may be looking for the sorts of things that we have to offer. By being willing to be generous, we can find comfort that, yes, we really are part of a bigger plan.
No matter what way you look at it, spirituality and generosity are very closely related. Because of that, it’s important that we are in touch with our generous side and allow it to come out every once in awhile so that we can feel that deep connection with the world and with others. Even if you aren’t especially “spiritual” in any way, you can still find a lot of significance if you look at the role of giving in your life.
