Downsizing Made Simple

Doesn’t downsizing seem to be a trend nowadays? If you haven’t heard about it, downsizing is when you go through your home and you move to a smaller space. Many people do it in cities or if their children have grown up and moved out. Smaller spaces usually cost less and are less of a pain to take care of when it comes to cleaning and other tasks.

When you do this, you usually have to try and determine what you don’t need any more. By doing that, you will reduce the amount of clutter that you have in your home. That being said, you don’t necessarily have to be moving in order to downsize what you’ve got – here are some basic tips you can use when you’re looking to downsize the amount of stuff you have in your home!

Make inventory of all the things you absolutely cannot get rid of.  When you downsize, you don’t have to get rid of absolutely everything! If you have items that are of sentimental value, or you have items that you use on a regular basis, you can totally keep them! Write all of it down and then make sure that those items don’t accidentally get taken away with everything else that you are getting rid of. Put these things in a special spot if you have to, and tell the other people in your home not to touch it.

Take your time! Don’t feel like you have to do everything right away. Even if you’re moving, make sure that you give yourself sufficient time (like, a couple of months) in order to get everything sorted properly. That way, if you also have to have a yard sale, go to pawn shops, or contact a junk removal company to come and take some of your stuff away, you can schedule that appointment without any issues and without giving yourself more stress than you want to deal with.

Don’t just get rid of stuff – recycle, donate, sell, or give away! Many people will just trash everything – you don’t want to do that! You want to take some time and see if you can either get money for the stuff you’re getting rid of, or donate it to Goodwill or another organization that will be able to get it to people who need it. You can even give it away to friends if you know that they need something (I’ve gotten my fair share of hand-me-downs in my day!). Either way, don’t just throw it away – your “junk” could be someone else’s treasure.

So, if you’ve been thinking about getting rid of some of the stuff in your home, use this guide to help you downsize, then contact us to help you get rid of some of your old junk! Why recycle and donate before sending to the landfill

Many people are starting to get more involved with recycling and donating the items that they don’t need. But why is this becoming so popular? What is happening in the world around us to make people more conscious of the impacts of their junk? Here are three main reasons that people should consider recycling and donating their old “junk” instead of sending it off to the landfill to just sit and collect dust and rust and waste space.

recycle

Landfills are getting full enough as is. This is a huge problem that a lot of people don’t really think of, but the issue is, we have so much stuff that there isn’t anywhere to put it. Landfills are getting fuller and we are just running out of the space that we need in order to get rid of all this stuff. So instead of wasting even more space, perhaps we should start considering donations instead? That way, people are getting what they need and you aren’t taking up unnecessary space and wasting the resources that were originally used in order to make the product that you’re getting rid of.

There may be things that you have that other people need. This is one of the main reasons that you should consider donating instead of just tossing stuff away. Sometimes, people are in need of stuff that you have. They may have just moved and are in need of furniture that they can use in order to furnish their home. They may have a child that can use the crib that you were just going to get rid of otherwise. By donating to thrift stores or organizations that help people with donated items, you can get your stuff into the hands of people in need.

Recycling is great for the environment and can help businesses save money. If you recycle products, they may be able to be used in order to make new products, thus saving on production costs and lessening the impact of product making on the environment. Businesses can save money, which helps them to make more products, pay their employees more, and work on research. And, the environment will be thankful for all that you are doing as well. Instead of just tossing it away and letting it rot, which is also bad for the environment, recycling gives those items new life!

So yes, next time that you are thinking about getting rid of your junk, consider donating it or recycling it instead of just sending it off to the landfill. You too can play your role in helping our world to prosper and thrive.

Treasures in your junk

If you are looking at cleaning out your home and getting rid of junk, there are a lot of things that you need to consider. Many times, people don’t realize just how much stuff that they have and whether or not some of that stuff is valuable. Did you know that you can find treasures in your junk? It’s true! Here are some of the things that you may find while cleaning out your home.

umb91089ls__56680_zoom

Valuable Items. Sometimes, you just find items that are valuable. It sounds simple, but there are some things in your home, like jewelry or items that were made a certain way, that have some sort of monetary value to those that may want to purchase such things. Many companies are taking items and reselling them, and there are a lot of places all over the country where you can go and get items appraised so you know what you have. You may have an antique that you didn’t realize that you had – or you may just have a few items that look pretty but have no value. Get it checked out before you just pitch it!

Money. This sounds silly, but I can tell you that I’ve found money while cleaning out my home. About 2 months ago I was moving new furniture into my house, and we moved the carpet – under the carpet was an envelope that I had obviously dropped, and it had about $40 in it! I was excited. There are all sorts of stories out there about people finding significant amounts of money in furniture that they’ve bought as well. So before you get rid of anything, especially furniture, make sure that you open all of the drawers and look in all of the nooks and crannies to make sure that you don’t accidentally send some cash off with your junk.

Family Items. Sometimes, we don’t know where particular family heirlooms or other items that may have been passed to us have gone. Even though many family items don’t have any monetary value, finding them may be significant to you emotionally, which makes it important that you don’t get rid of them either. If you want to pass them down to your children, you want to make sure that they don’t accidentally get hauled off with everything else that you’re getting rid of. Be mindful and look at everything carefully before making a decision.

Obviously, there are a lot of other things that you may find while you are cleaning out your home. Make sure that you don’t overlook anything, because you may find treasures in your junk that you didn’t realize were there!

Why partner with Junk Jitsu?

If you are a realtor or you own apartments, did you know that you can partner with Junk Jitsu? We have partnered with a number of different companies and individuals so that we can provide our junk removal services to their tenants. It’s true! There are a number of reasons that you should partner with Junk Jitsu! Here are some of the best ones.

Realtors can help their client save on cash and time for property clean outs by referring Junk Jitsu to do the job. Okay, so you have apartments, and you want to make sure that you get the apartment back clean so that there isn’t a lot of hassle. And, if you have a way to offer them a discount, they’re going to be even more likely to make sure that things are done before they leave the apartment. Moving out of an apartment is hard and it can be expensive, so if you partner with Junk Jitsu, you’re going to be more likely to succeed and you won’t have to stress yourself out with apartment cleanouts that waste both time and money. Junk Jitsu can make this process so much easier for you.

Clean houses increase property value. You’ve got to keep the houses and apartments that you own clean. And by doing that, you’re going to see that your property values increase, because people like to see clean homes. If they perceive that a home or rental is “dirty,” they’re going to be less likely to move in and the value of that home is going to go down, down, down. You’re making an investment when you buy these homes, so you want to make sure that you keep that investment safe, no matter what. By working with Junk Jitsu, we can help you to increase the property value of your buildings, so that you always end up coming out ahead!

Don’t forget about the benefits to you if someone bails. Okay, so we’ve all had people who have moved out of a home without a trace. It’s a very difficult thing to go through, and as the realtor, you can sometimes be left with a complete mess that you don’t really have time or cash to deal with. If you’ve partnered with us, however, you don’t have to be worried about this. We can help you out by providing those same discounts to you, thus making it easier for you to get the job done without wasting your precious time or resources.

Why hire a small business

Now, we at Junk Jitsu love to talk about junk because we know how much of a pain it can be to get rid of the junk in your home. But did you know that we are also a local business? It’s true! We aren’t under a huge corporate umbrella; we’re a small business that offers personal service to all of our clients! And we’re proud of it – our small business is one that works to help our community become better.

Keep-It-Local-Logo-Concepts

Did you know that it’s actually really important to support small businesses? Not just our business, either – there are a lot of small businesses in our region and around the country that could use your business and support. Here’s why you should consider doing so.

Helps the community grow. Do you love your community? Then you can help your community to grow by helping out small businesses. Small businesses help the community expand and become a better place; most small businesses donate to local charities and other organizations that work hard to make the world a better place. We at Junk Jitsu help the community by donating a majority of the junk that we clean out of homes so that it can be reused by those who need it! Other small businesses donate money and time for charities. You’ll see small businesses like ours at community events and getting involved with fundraisers. Look around and see how much of an impact small businesses have on your local community!

Great for local economy. If you want to see your community to do well economically, one of the best ways to do so is by helping out a small business in your community. As these small businesses get business, they will invest in other projects and they will put money back into your local economy. It’s also great because that means that you get to keep those small businesses in your area; if they stay around (instead of closing down), they will continue to grow and will help your community economically for years to come. They also provide jobs for those in your community who may be looking for them, which also helps your local economy to grow as well.

Guarantee for personalized service. This is one of the best reasons to get involved with a local small business. You will get the personalized service that you need and deserve. What’s better than the business owner knowing your name, or your local coffee barista knowing your favorite drink? If you take your business to a small business, you’re almost guaranteed to get that personalized service, and it will get done correctly the first time.

Spring cleaning in the yard

Today, we’re going to hit the last of our spring cleaning series and talk about spring cleaning in the yard. The yard is a place that we sometimes neglect, especially if we don’t have a garden or another reason to really clean it up at all. So, here are some tips that you can use to help clean up your yard for the spring.

Clean up all of that debris. Wintertime makes our yards really messy, which can cause some problems when it comes to spring cleaning. Tree branches fall, runoff makes piles of mud and dirt, and you may even still have leaves left from the fall because the snow started coming too quickly. Before you do anything else, get rid of what Mother Nature left you. Many local governments will offer pickup services a couple of times a year for natural debris, and if your area does not, Junk Jitsu can help you out with that as well.

Mow a couple weeks into spring, when the grass has finally gotten green and is starting to get tall. You want to an initial mowing because it will help get rid of the dead grass that may be underneath. The first mowing is pretty rough sometimes, but it will be good and it will help your yard look healthy and ready to go for the rest of the spring and summer. Also, it’ll help you to get a head start on the mowing thing, so your neighbors/landlord/homeowner’s association won’t get upset with you because you “aren’t keeping your yard up to the standards.”

If you have a garden, start pulling weeds and preparing those areas for planting. If you start pulling the weeds early, it’ll be easier to clean up when it’s time for you to actually start planting. Why deal with more weeds if you don’t want or have to? It’ll just make the process that much more difficult later on, and you’re already going to be breaking your back when you get to actually planting your flowers and vegetables.

Get rid of clutter, junk, and things that don’t work anymore. Is there a broken bird fountain in your yard? Is the fence busted, or did you repair it and you still have the broken piece sitting somewhere? Is there a lawn mower or weedwacker that’s just sitting there that hasn’t worked in years? Now is the time to get rid of all of that – your neighbors and your family will appreciate that it’s out of the way, and it will make your yard look that much nicer to everyone that may come and visit your home.

Spring cleaning in the bedroom

To continue with our series on spring cleaning, we’re going to take a look at what you need to do in order to do spring cleaning in the bedroom. The bedroom is likely somewhere that you spend a lot of time, so it’s important that you don’t skip it while you’re going through your spring cleaning routine.

But where do you start? What do you need in order to make sure that your bedroom is ready to roll for the spring? Here are some tips you can keep in mind.

– Flip Your Mattress. Flip your mattress over at least once a year. This helps to keep it clean and it helps your mattress to stay in working condition for a number of years. It also helps it to stay more comfortable.

– Change Your Sheets. If you haven’t changed your sheets in awhile, now’s the time to do it. Get some bright colored sheets onto your bed, and change the pillowcases out as well! That way, your whole room is going to feel fresh and clean. If you don’t have another set of them, now’s the time to find a new set of sheets to buy and use on your bed. You may also want to consider getting new pillows if it’s been awhile as well.

– Make sure all electronic devices are working. Just like the living room, you likely have a number of electronics in your bedroom as well. Are the batteries changed in all of the important devices that have them? Is your alarm clock working, is the TV working, do you have any dead laptops or cell phones that you’ve just been hiding in your junk drawer that need to be recycled? Take care of it now.

– Speaking of the junk drawer… Admit it; you’ve got one in one of your dressers. I have two in my bedroom (one in a small dresser, one in a larger one). When was the last time you cleaned out your “junk drawer?” Even if you’re just reorganizing what is in there (mine have a lot of birthday cards and small presents that I don’t have space to display), you can make more room for other important items!

– Go through your clothes! Yes, there are going to be people who look at this and try to ignore it, but when you’re spring cleaning, that’s the best time for you to consider what you need to get rid of. If you’ve lost weight, get rid of the bigger clothes. If there’s something you just don’t’ wear, you can pitch it. Just get rid of what you don’t need; make sure you donate it if it’s still wearable, however!

If you go through all of these different steps, you’ll find that it’s much easier for you to clean out your bedroom. That way, you’ll feel less cluttered and more comfortable.

Spring cleaning in the living room

Spring is here! We all know how long this winter has been, and we’re all ready for it to get finished. Many of us have found that it’s difficult to get ourselves in gear to make sure that you have everything ready to go for this time of year.

The living room is really difficult to get in order because it’s an area that many of us spend a lot of time in there, so we have to start by actually finding a bit of time where no one is in the room. Here are some questions that you can ask yourself, which can help you out with spring cleaning in the living room or den.

Do all of the electronics work? Some of us still have a VCR (remember those?) or a DVD player in the living room that doesn’t work, but you still have them. You may have a speaker that’s gone dead or another electronic that isn’t working correctly. Spring cleaning is the best time to get rid of those items.

Are all of the batteries fresh and the clocks correct? Many people have a smoke detector in the living room, and usually a clock or two. Have you checked all of the smoke detectors in your home? Do all of the items that use batteries have fresh ones in them? Did you set the clocks correctly? Check all of these in your home at the same time so you don’t forget.

Are there any knick knacks that you don’t really like or don’t know why you have them? I know that there have been knick knacks in my home that I really didn’t like or want, and if you have that problem too, you need to get rid of them. You can get them removed when you have a junk removal service come in, or you can sell them at a yard sale, if you’re having one.

Is the furniture in proper condition? Furniture gets worn out, especially if you’re using it all of the time. Take the time to see how the upholstery is holding up. Are there any holes that you have to repair? Do you have to replace any furniture that is falling apart? When was the last time you dusted? Ask yourself all of these questions when you’re looking through your living room or den so that you can have furniture that you are proud to have your friends and family sit on.

So, if you keep these things in mind, you’ll have a much easier time figuring out what you need to do and get rid of. What do you do in order to get ready for spring cleaning? What tasks do you do in order to get everything in order for this time of year? Share some thoughts in the comment section – we want to hear from you!

How to determine what is junk

Now, you may be thinking about using Junk Jitsu’s services, but you aren’t 100% sure on what you need to keep and what you need to get rid of. What is junk? How can you determine what you consider “junk” and what you’re going to keep around your home?

question_1544984c

We figured that may come up, so that’s why we decided to focus this blog post on that very question. How do you determine what is junk and what you should keep? Here are four major questions that you should ask when you are figuring out whether an item is junk or something that you should keep.

When was the last time you used it? The general rule of thumb is, if you haven’t used it in more than a year, then it’s probably time for you to get rid of it. Yes, that even means the crockpot that you have that only comes out when you absolutely have to use it.

Is it wasting space? This is a hard thing to determine. If there’s a couch in your home that no one uses, then you may want to consider ditching it because it’s just in the way. If your closet looks to be overloaded with clothing, then you may have to start digging through it in order to figure out what you wear and what you don’t wear. If the item you are looking at seems to be in the way, then you may either want to relocate it or junk it.

Do you have multiples of that specific item? Why do you need two of that kitchen appliance? Do you really need the extra poster that looks exactly the same as the one you have hanging in your bedroom? Do you need three copies of the same book? Usually, the answer for that question is “no,” so if you’re finding that you have multiples of the same item, one of them can be dealt with so that they aren’t taking space (as discussed above).

Does it work or fit anymore? I will admit that I have been known to keep a strand of Christmas lights that don’t work, because I’m convinced that I can make them work next year. I will keep a pair of pants that I assume will fit me after I’ve lost weight. But if neither of those things is happening, why am I keeping them? It’s silly. If you have items that don’t work or don’t fit, don’t waste your time with them. If Junk Jitsu takes them, we can get the working parts to the appropriate people so that they can be used again. If it doesn’t fit you, we can make sure that it gets to someone that it will fit! That’s the great part about our services – even if you can’t use it anymore, we can make sure it gets somewhere where it can.

Spring cleaning in the kitchen

This article is the first in our series on spring cleaning. We know, it doesn’t feel like spring is coming anytime soon, and since the groundhog said that it was going to be another 6 weeks, it’s going to feel even longer. But, just because it’s not spring yet doesn’t mean that you can’t get started on your spring cleaning tasks.

One of the most difficult places to get clean is your kitchen, which is why we decided it would be the first destination in our journey of spring cleaning. Here are some of the things that you should be looking at when it comes to cleaning out your kitchen.

– Get rid of any appliances that aren’t working or that you don’t use. Yes, I know that you may just need that roaster thing that your aunt gave you when she cleaned out her kitchen, but when was the last time you used it? A good rule of thumb is, if you haven’t used it in a year, you probably aren’t going to use it. If it’s still working, donate it or give it away; if it’s not working (or not working well), toss it or recycle it with Junk Jitsu.

– Clean out the fridge and clean off the shelves. We all lose track of time when it comes to the food that we eat. Because of that, we end up with outdated food that we keep pushing aside. Take the time to go through all of the food in your house to make sure all it is within its expiration date. Note: there are some foods that you can use a week or two after that date, especially if they’re canned vegetables or something similar. Foods with flour and other perishable ingredients have to be tossed, though.

– Wipe everything down, twice. No matter how clean you keep your kitchen, all of that cleaning is going to kick up some dust, dirt, and other gross things. There may also be bacteria and such that is residue from whatever tasks you have done in your kitchen recently. So, after you’re done cleaning everything out of your kitchen, wipe it down. You may even want to do it twice, since you want to prevent that stuff from getting onto your food and eating utensils.

– Check all of your cleaning supplies. While you’re digging through your cupboards, you may as well also check out the cleaning supplies. Yes, certain cleaning supplies (not many) have expiration dates or, in the case of wet wipes and other similar materials, they may have dried out. Or, you may have an empty container that you forgot to throw away. Make sure you get rid of all of that as well, and then replace what you need to replace. That way, your house can stay sparkling clean, you’ll have the appropriate cleaning supplies for when you start working on the rest of your house, and you won’t be surprised by something that is empty or not working.
